Hiking in Ayrshire

Hill walking in Ayrshire is generally low-altitude and accessible — no Munros, but plenty of distinctive volcanic plugs and coastal viewpoints that work for an after-work blast or a quiet weekend wander. Loudoun Hill in the east, Brown Carrick above Dunure, and Knockdolian deep in the south are all under three hours and give big rewards on a clear day.

The picks below are ranked against current wind, rain, and visibility — three things that matter more than total ascent on an Ayrshire hill. The longer south-Ayrshire walks need a careful eye on conditions when low cloud rolls in.
