Surfing in Ayrshire

Surfing in Ayrshire works on the bigger Atlantic swells that wrap into the Firth of Clyde. Most days are small — under 2ft — but a steady westerly through autumn and winter can build to head-high at the right beach. The classic spots run along the North Ayrshire coast at Saltcoats and Irvine, with Croy Bay south of Ayr the quieter alternative when the obvious breaks get crowded.

Wind direction matters more than swell size: easterlies hold up the waves while westerlies just blow them out. The picks below are scored against current wave height and wind speed — use the time picker on the main planner to scrub through tomorrow's forecast and catch a window.
