Kitesurfing in Ayrshire is a year-round sport given the Firth's reliable westerlies. Barassie Sands and Ayr Beach are the main launches — both wide, flat and exposed enough to catch consistent cross-shore wind without the gusty hills you'd get further north. Saltcoats works on bigger days when the chop stays manageable.
The picks below are ranked on current wind speed: under 12mph and you'll be sitting on the beach, over 35mph and you're looking for cover. Sweet spot for most kite sizes is 18-30mph, so the scoring rewards that band heaviest.
Saltcoats, North Ayrshire
Reliable beach break on the Firth of Clyde. Works on most W swells with light E winds.
Ayr, South Ayrshire
Long expanse of sand running north from Ayr promenade. Good for swims, walks, and kitesurfing.
Barassie, South Ayrshire
Open beach favoured by Ayrshire kiters. Needs a steady cross-shore wind, ideally NW or SW.
